China's Confused Message

The Internet market in China is growing rapidly; an expected 8 million people will be on line in China by the end of the year. This poses a new problem for the government on how to keep control of information - they are asking service providers to block certain websites, but this still leaves many routes for information to filter in.

China has recently banned foreign companies investing in the emerging Chinese Internet market. This ban should affect both current and potential investors, but some companies have defied the ruling. One company - china.com - in whom a US company has a large stake was quoted as saying they would just pull everything out of the joint venture and move overseas if the ban were enforced.
